You’d be hard pressed to find horror punk rock music without some reference to Misfits albums. The Misfits band is one group that is strongly associated with this sub genre and few others really come to mind. This is an accomplishment of sorts for the group considering that they have gone through some tough times.
The story of the band is rooted in the life and work of Glenn Danzig. It was Danzig who gave the original inspiration both for the band identity and its musical style. The first line up in 1977 consisted of Manny Martinez, Jimmy Battle and Diane DiPiazza. This initial roster didn’t even last a year as Battle and DiPiazza took off only after a month. Jerry Caiafa, now known as Jerry Only, was recruited to fill in. Together with Danzig, Only became the member that stayed the longest in the band. Others have been joining and leaving at such short notice that the band now has a list of 17 members to date.
The band immediately started work on its first album Static Age on the same year of their founding. There were no record labels though willing to support the project. The band ended up releasing singles. It took two decades before Static Age could be released in full.
The year following their founding, the band started to move into a dramatic shift that would eventually become definitive. Danzig started to compose pieces that increasingly featured horror themes. The members of the band also eventually transformed on stage as audiences saw more of them in goth clothing printed with skeletons and with devilock hairdos. This was when every single Misfits album from then on was labelled horror punk.
The group continued performing from 1978 to the early 80s. By 1982, they finally managed to crank out Walk Among Us. Although this was not their first original piece of work, it was officially their first full album release. Sadly, one year later, the group fell apart. Danzig lost interest and transferred his attention to his new band, Samhain. At this point, conflict also began to creep into the group and Danzig was said to be so pissed at one point that he announced that the band was disbanding. With the founder gone, Only set up his own heavy metal band, Kryst the Conqueror. Only underwent a spiritual transformation of sorts and began making Christian music.
As fate would have it though, the Misfits didn’t disappear entirely. After band members went separate ways, renewed interest in the group and its music emerged. It was so strong that Only decided he wanted the Misfits back in action. This started a legal battle with Danzig on the opposing end. Before the conflict could really reach the court though, an agreement was set. Only could use the name and logo but Misfits merch rights had to be shared with Danzig. This was even if Danzig no longer wanted to have anything to do with the group.
The band was officially reborn under the leadership of Only but it went through more line up issues. By 2001, Only was the only member left with no prospect for a new Misfit album. Presently however, the official line up listed for the band also includes Dez Cadena and Julio “Robo” Valencia. Their most recent work together is the single Land of the Dead released in 2009.
